Review: Illamasqua Hydra Veil Primer

I recently had a meeting with Helen Roche (Professional Development Manager and Pro Artist from Illamasqua) and she was showing/talking me through the full range of Illamasqua products (it was like the perfect working day for me!). In this meeting I discovered their Hydra Veil Primer and I knew just from the look of it that I had to try it…

You know me: I’m a total sucker for anything that claims to hydrate the skin and I particularly love a water-based, gel product and this primer is just that. Part hydrator, part primer, this product contains microalgae and vitamins C and B3 to instantly hydrate and smooth the skin but not just on the surface: it works with your skin throughout your wear to deliver hydration, making your make-up last like a dream and your skin reaping the rewards at the same time.  Marketed as suitable for all skin types, Hydra Veil includes plant extracts to cool, calm, refresh and soothe the skin, all at the same time, making this suitable even for sensitive skins.

The consistency is like nothing I’ve ever seen in a primer before, it’s almost like frog spawn (I’m not even joking). When you open the lid, it looks like calm water in the pot but if you stir it up (with the spoon it comes with), it all breaks up into a spawn-like mash.  Far from being just a quirky feature, this is actually one of the reasons it works so well on your skin: the product is completely self-levelling (so if you leave it a few seconds after stirring it up, you’ll see it settle back down to its previous, undisturbed state).  The self-levelling nature of this gel supports its claim to smooth the skin.  By applying it to your whole face (even up to the lash line) you will instantly see a difference in the texture and plumpness of your skin.

I’ve been using this for about two weeks now, so I feel like I’ve got a fair feel of it. Being a combination skin type with regular dehydration, I find this product comforting and a pleasure to apply. It does not in the least bit contribute to any shine I experience in the day, in fact I would go so far as to say I think it reduces the shine I experience (because it keeps my skin so well hydrated, my skin obviously doesn’t feel the need to compensate). What I’m saying is (to be completely clear), if you’re oily, this will suit you because it’s light and oil-free (it’ll even reduce the appearance of large pores by plumping them out!), if you’re dry this will add much needed hydration and comfort and if you’re sensitive, you’ll love the cooling and calming that this instantly provides. You really can’t go wrong with this one, it’s an absolute delight and I honestly look forward to using it in the mornings.

Hydra Veil Primer by Illamasqua is £34.00 for 30ml (if you have a Pro Card you’ll get up to 40% off!). I bought mine from their Beak Street store in London but it’s available in all their stand-alone stores, concessions and online. Have you tried it yet?
